In this episode of Science Nation, host Sorin Badea (Radio Guerrilla) welcomes Andrei Tudose (Marginal.ro) back into the studio to follow up on the Otherwise Residency's field investigations into industrial methane emissions.
Andrei provides historical context on Romania's gas and oil industry—noting its past milestones as home to early refineries and illuminated cities—before detailing the team's current findings. Investigating over 100 oil and gas extraction sites the team discovered that over 90% had active methane leaks. Because methane is invisible, odorless, and 20 times more potent for global warming than CO₂, even small leaks carry a massive environmental impact; a single small leak per hour matches the climate damage of driving an SUV for an entire year.
The discussion highlights the gap in regulatory oversight: despite EU regulations mandating methane capture, Romania lacks clear institutional accountability and enforcement. Capturing 75% of these current leaks could provide enough energy to power local industry for a year. By bringing artists into the field alongside lawyers, journalists, and scientists, the residency aims to make complex scientific data visual and relatable to spark meaningful public dialogue.
