Open Practice Society (or, as it became known, OPS), is Marginal’s social infrastructure for intergenerational and
interdisciplinary learning. It brings
together students, emerging practitioners, and experienced mentors (also known as more experienced colleagues) in
a horizontally semi-structured environment
of exchange, experimentation, and mutual support. By questioning and complementing traditional academic models,
OPS prioritises practice-led learning,
collaborative inquiry, and the long-term development of early-career practitioners.
OPS supports progression within the wider Marginal community, creating pathways from participant to collaborator,
to researcher, and mentor. Its intensive
formats encourage ownership, collective responsibility, and shared authorship, resulting in new works, research
notes, and professional relationships that
continue beyond the program itself.
Otherwise Residency is Marginal’s core platform for artistic research at the intersection of art, science, and
public policy. It provides artists and
researchers with the time, resources, and context to explore questions that exceed conventional disciplinary
boundaries, allowing art to take an active
stance towards contemporary environmental issues.
The residency functions as a site of experimentation where different methods, languages, and forms of expertise
meet. By embedding artists within active
scientific and policy projects, Otherwise creates conditions for meaningful exchange and new forms of public
relevance. Each residency contributes journals,
prototypes, datasets, and reflections that extend the value of the process beyond the residency period itself.
ARCH - Marginal’s Artistic Research and Creation Hub - is the research-production platform. It focuses on
translating high-rigor research into tangible
and accessible public forms artefacts. Unlike a traditional production hub, ARCH prioritizes creation as a site
for the manifestation of situated knowledge,
entwining various threads related to nature, technology, and human interactions.
ARCH treats production as part of the research process rather than its final stage. Each outcome remains connected
to the questions, methods, and
collaborations from which it emerged, contributing to larger and ongoing lines of inquiry.
Mic Matters is Marginal’s public conversation platform, sharing a raw insight into the workings behind Marginal’s
projects. Through interviews, dialogues,
and recorded discussions, it offers a shared, lived account of the ideas, methods, and experiences behind our
projects.
Mic Matters helps make artistic research more accessible by connecting specialist practices with wider audiences.
It creates space for reflection, exchange,
and constructive critique, while also documenting approaches that others may adapt or build upon.
