Do you sometimes feel like the time you spend on social media self-promoting your work is much longer than the time you spend actually working, and even then, your work doesn’t get seen anyway? We feel the same! So we launched into orbit the first Share, Tag or Dye session. We question the mediums of art dissemination, with focus on the digital, participatory and collaborative approaches, and exhibition structures, while tackling questions regarding social media as a medium of consumption for artistic objects – to what extent can the contemporary small screen, which we all own, render the complexity of a work of art?
We set out to democratize the idea of open call through the absence of the usual selection process (simple, direct, free, no selection, no fuss) and thus, we came together, 204 artists from all over the world, in an installation that translated everyone’s contributions back into the material plane, using cyanotype, a 19th-century photographic technique based on UV-sensitive ferrous salts.
Public events:
- Global open call for contributions – links to a social media post, where the artist has self-promoted their artistic work, regardless of medium, approach, date of publication, etc. We didn’t decide on behalf of anyone, so everyone was welcome and we overturned the open call structure – the validation/invalidation tool became our collaboration platform;
- Workshop on the occasion of the first ever edition of the World Antotype Day , in which we gathered at Allkimik and tried our hand at the first photographic technique, based on discoloration and natural substances (emulsion from fruits, vegetables, plants – we used turmeric, beets and mulberries)
- Exhibition-installation VAGon- in(ter)disciplined space, within the Malmaison Studios, where the 204 contributions became 51 strips of viscose that studded the space and in which we spent some funky time strolling, instead of scrolling
- Cyanoparty, on the occasion of the World Cyanotype Day (and it was a blast!)
- Other events – guided tour, DoiJoi – September 2022 circuit, White Night of the Galleries.
Share, Tag or Dye – first ed. was developed in co-production VAGon & Allkimik Photographic Association, in partnership with Alternative Photography and Malmaison Studios, financed by the Romanian Ministry of Culture through the 2022 Access Program.
